Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has announced a major expansion of its ultra-fast charging network across Europe, with plans to install thousands of chargers capable of adding 200 kilometers of range in just five minutes. The initiative is part of BYD's broader push to make electric vehicles more convenient for European drivers, addressing one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging time.
The new chargers, which will be deployed in key markets including Germany, France, the UK, and Spain, are designed to compete with Tesla's Supercharger network. BYD claims its technology uses a proprietary battery and cooling system to handle the high power output required for such rapid charging without degrading the battery's lifespan.
"This is a game-changer for electric mobility," said a BYD spokesperson. "Our goal is to make charging as fast and easy as refueling a gasoline car."
The first units are expected to be operational by the end of next year, with full rollout targeted over the following three years. BYD is also working with local utilities and governments to ensure the grid can support the high demand.
Industry experts note that while the technology is impressive, widespread adoption will depend on infrastructure investment and vehicle compatibility. Many current EVs cannot accept such high charge rates, but BYD's future models will be equipped accordingly.
