Voting has concluded in California's gubernatorial primary, giving voters their first opportunity to choose the state's next leader. The Economist's Checks and Balance podcast co-hosts Charlotte Howard and James Bennet, alongside West Coast correspondent Aryn Braun, analyzed the key issues and candidates.

California, often seen as a bellwether for progressive policy, faces serious challenges including housing affordability, homelessness, and budget deficits. The panel discussed whether the perception of dysfunction is fair and examined the state's financial health.

Key candidates include billionaire activist Tom Steyer, former Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and Republican Steve Hilton. Steyer's campaign focuses on climate change and economic populism, while Becerra emphasizes his record on healthcare and civil rights. Hilton, a former advisor to David Cameron, offers a conservative alternative with emphasis on deregulation and local control.

Polls suggest a competitive race, with Hilton showing surprising strength among independent voters. The outcome will shape California's direction on issues from immigration to tech regulation.

"California's problems are real, but the state also has immense resources and talent. The next governor must bridge divides and deliver practical solutions," said Aryn Braun.
