Manchester United's interim head coach Michael Carrick has indicated that forward Marcus Rashford could still have a future at Old Trafford, despite his current loan spell at Barcelona. The 28-year-old English international, who joined the Spanish giants on a season-long deal, faces an uncertain summer as Barcelona hold a €30 million option to make the move permanent.
Carrick, who briefly managed Rashford during a three-game stint in 2021, emphasized that no final decision has been made regarding the player's long-term prospects. "There's decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation," Carrick stated. "But at this point in time, nothing's been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there's nothing to say."
Rashford's situation is complicated by several factors. The forward still has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract, which includes a lucrative 25% salary increase if the club secures Champions League qualification. Additionally, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's desire to reduce the club's wage bill adds another layer to the decision-making process.
"Whoever's here, I want to work with, and help them improve," Carrick added. "At the moment, it's this squad of players. There's obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen. But certainly, as a coach, and leader of a squad, we want to get the best out of everyone."
While former manager Ruben Amorim believed Rashford sought a new challenge away from Manchester, Carrick's personal history with the player—having been his teammate, coach, and temporary manager—suggests a different perspective. Rashford, currently United's 15th all-time top scorer, remains a popular figure at the club where he developed through the academy.
As Carrick focuses on United's upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea, the Rashford dilemma looms in the background.
