Caught Between Superpowers: Europe's Fight to Keep Up With the US and China

Europe is facing a severe economic and strategic squeeze as it struggles to maintain its competitive edge against the United States and China.

For decades, the European model coasted on a comfortable dual dependency: relying on the American military umbrella for security while fueling its markets with inexpensive Chinese goods. Today, that strategy is rapidly unraveling, leaving the continent trailing behind both global superpowers.

Across the Atlantic, the historic alliance with Washington is fraying. Disputes over trade tariffs, defense budget contributions, and geopolitical interests—including strategic influence over Greenland—are heavily testing the transatlantic bond.

Meanwhile, Beijing maintains a tight grip on the critical raw materials and manufacturing supply chains that European industries desperately need to function. Europe's growing marginalization on the world stage was thrown into sharp relief last week during a high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. European leaders were noticeably absent from the room, yet the policy decisions forged in that bilateral summit will inevitably reshape the continent's economic landscape.

Despite these mounting challenges, Europe is not without its own geopolitical leverage. The bloc boasts a formidable single market of 450 million consumers, granting it significant regulatory and economic influence. However, experts warn that simply having a massive consumer base is no longer enough. To truly bridge the widening competitiveness gap and reassert itself globally, Europe must commit to sweeping structural reforms and unprecedented levels of internal investment.
