Chelsea captain Millie Bright has announced her retirement from professional football with immediate effect, bringing an end to a storied career that saw her win eight Women's Super League titles and play a pivotal role in England's Euro 2022 triumph.
The 32-year-old defender made 294 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Doncaster Belles in 2015, and earned 88 caps for the Lionesses. She captained both club and country, leading England to the 2023 World Cup final.
Bright has not featured for Chelsea since February due to an ankle injury, and has decided now is the right time to step away. "Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye to playing football," she said. "I've given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge."
She will remain with Chelsea in a new role as club ambassador and will continue as a trustee of the Chelsea Foundation.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman paid tribute: "Millie has played such a big role in the growth of the women's game... It is hard to put into words the impact she has had."
Bright's retirement comes as Chelsea sit six points adrift of Women's Super League leaders Manchester City with two games remaining, and after their Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal.
