Chelsea Football Club has officially completed the signing of veteran forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, securing the 35-year-old on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
The move comes on the back of a stellar campaign for Welbeck on the south coast. The experienced frontman netted a career-best 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances last season, finishing as one of the highest-scoring English players in the top flight.
Bringing in a 35-year-old marks a distinct pivot from the transfer strategy utilized by Chelsea’s ownership since their 2022 takeover, which has almost exclusively prioritized recruiting young, emerging talent. Welbeck is the Blues' third acquisition of the summer transfer window, joining Marco Palestra from Atalanta and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the unexpected transfer, Welbeck shared his excitement to get started at Stamford Bridge:

The Englishman's arrival adds considerable depth—and congestion—to Chelsea’s heavily stocked attacking department. The London club already boasts Joao Pedro, who is widely considered the first-choice number nine, alongside Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha.
Welbeck brings an extensive Premier League pedigree to his new club. He began his career at Manchester United before completing a £16 million move to Arsenal in 2014. After five years in North London and a brief stint at Watford, he found a long-term home at Brighton in 2020. On the international stage, he has scored 16 goals in 42 caps for England, though he last featured for the Three Lions in 2018 and was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad.
