In a recent episode of the AI XR Podcast, host Rony Abovitz highlighted two major developments in robotics and AI, but argued that the real story lies elsewhere.

First, humanoid robots successfully completed a half marathon in Beijing, showcasing China's rapid advancements in robotics. Second, a Sony robot defeated professional table tennis players using computer vision and real-time spin prediction. However, Abovitz contends that neither of these feats is the most critical narrative.

The true concern, according to Abovitz, is data infiltration. Almost every open-source AI model in the United States contains Chinese pre-training data woven into its fabric. What China shared with the West was designed to infiltrate, while the best-in-class technology remains within China. Robots exported to the US are less capable than those running domestically. This creates a two-sided game where the US has watched the situation unfold in slow motion for 30 years without taking decisive action.

Abovitz notes that Boston Dynamics, once considered the world leader in robotics, no longer holds that reputation. The episode explores these themes in depth, urging a reevaluation of how AI and robotics data are managed globally.
