Remedy’s new game, Control Resonant, is a direct sequel to the 2019 hit Control, but the developer is quick to point out that you don’t need to have played the original to jump in. During a recent hands-on preview, creative director Mikael Kasurinen explained that the two games are “two sides of the same coin” — connected chronologically, yet designed to stand alone.

“You can play them in any order,” said Kasurinen.

Set in the same supernatural universe, Resonant shifts perspective to a new protagonist whose abilities and story run parallel to Jesse Faden’s journey in the first game. The familiar Oldest House setting returns, but with a fresh look and new mechanics that build on the original’s physics-based combat.

Players can expect a deep dive into the mysteries of the Federal Bureau of Control, with answers that might also raise new questions. Remedy has emphasized that this is both a sequel and a starting point, making it accessible for newcomers while rewarding longtime fans.

The game is set to release later this year, and based on our time with it, it’s shaping up to be a compelling expansion of the Control universe — one that doesn’t require homework to enjoy.
