Cree Summer is making a triumphant return to Hillman College, but this time she's trading her student ID for a professor's podium. The actress, who captured hearts as the free-spirited Freddie Brooks in the original series, will portray a law professor in Netflix's upcoming revival of the beloved sitcom.
Summer shared the exciting news during an interview at LAX on Thursday, describing the opportunity as a "full-circle moment." She revealed, "I get to come back as a teacher, law professor, esquire," highlighting her character's professional evolution since viewers last saw her on campus.
The revival will pick up decades after the original series concluded its six-season run from 1987 to 1993, introducing a new generation of Hillman students while bringing back familiar faces. Summer confirmed that "all the OGs are back," including co-stars Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, who will help bridge the original series with the new storyline.
"Black people are not a monolith. So, once again, just like the original, we're showing all the different facets of Black life," Summer emphasized, promising that the revival will offer more than just nostalgia.
The 10-episode series aims to capture the same cultural significance as its predecessor while introducing fresh perspectives through a standout new cast. Summer expressed that returning to the Hillman universe after more than three decades feels "surreal," comparing the experience to revisiting a cherished memory.
