Critchley's All-Round Brilliance Powers Essex to Dominant Innings Victory Over Hampshire

Essex secured a commanding innings victory over Hampshire in the County Championship Division One, wrapping up the match in just three days at the Utilita Bowl.

All-rounder Matt Critchley delivered a match-winning performance, scoring a magnificent 173 in Essex's first innings before claiming remarkable figures of 5-9 in Hampshire's second innings to seal a comprehensive win by an innings and 137 runs.

After declaring on 461-7, Essex's bowlers dismantled Hampshire for 156 in their first innings, with stand-in captain Sam Cook taking three wickets. Enforcing the follow-on with a massive 305-run lead, Essex continued their dominance as Hampshire collapsed to 168 all out in their second innings.

Essex, who managed only three wins in a disappointing 2025 season, have started 2026 as the first team to secure a victory, earning 22 points while Hampshire collected just two.

The result marks a challenging start for new Hampshire head coach Russell Domingo, who replaced Adi Birrell after last season. Hampshire had narrowly avoided relegation in 2025 after scoring the fewest batting points in the championship.

Hampshire's batting struggles were evident throughout the match. After slipping to 48-3 on day two, they lost four wickets for just 17 runs on the third morning. Despite a brief 81-run partnership between Nick Gubbins and Tom Prest in the second innings, the collapse resumed once Critchley entered the attack.

Critchley's five-wicket haul, combined with his earlier century, highlighted his exceptional all-round contribution. Spinner Simon Harmer also played a key role, taking crucial wickets to support Essex's dominant display.

This emphatic victory sets a strong tone for Essex's 2026 campaign, while Hampshire face an early test as they look to rebuild under their new coach.
