Dairick Duterte expressed his condolences following the death of Rene Baterbonia, a former Palarong Pambansa rival and Ateneo de Manila University standout.
In a social media post, Duterte recalled their competitive yet respectful battles on the basketball court during the national youth games. He described Baterbonia as a "true warrior" and a "class act," noting that their rivalry pushed him to become a better player.
"Rest in peace, my friend. You left us too soon," Duterte wrote.
Baterbonia, who also played for Ateneo in the UAAP, was remembered by the community as a skilled and humble athlete. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
The Palarong Pambansa, the country's largest annual multi-sport event for student-athletes, has produced many notable talents who went on to represent the Philippines in international competitions.
