Dannielynn Birkhead, the 19-year-old daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith, made a bold fashion statement at the Barnstable-Brown Gala on May 1, kicking off Kentucky Derby weekend with a dramatic style transformation.
Accompanied by her father Larry Birkhead, Dannielynn wore a flowing black dress from Punk Rave Clothing and debuted a striking wispy pixie cut with silver roots and brown tips. Her father shared a photo on Instagram, captioning it: "Another year another Barnstable-Brown Gala for the @Kentuckyderby weekend. Dannielynn is rocking a fresh cut and 'goth-rock' style."
Larry also got in on the theme, noting that Dannielynn insisted he wear a Phillipp Plein jacket to match. Speaking to People, he revealed that his daughter "wanted something edgy and cool" for her hair, and he admitted to "bracing himself" as she chopped it off and added wild colors. He described the new look as a sign of her coming into her own: "This is kind of, I think her coming into her own, doing her own thing and exuding her own style."
The annual Derby outings have become a beloved tradition for the father-daughter duo. Last year, Dannielynn wore the same backless gown her mother wore to the event 21 years earlier, paired with a loose updo. For the race day, she opted for a mint-colored off-the-shoulder gown with layered tulle and a yellow flower headband.
Larry recalled that the tradition began by accident when a babysitter canceled 16 years ago, but it has since become a cherished part of their lives. "We had such a great time," he said after last year's events. "An unbelievable full circle moment seeing Dannielynn shine at the Barnstable-Brown Gala wearing her Mom's iconic dress."
As Dannielynn continues to forge her own path, her evolving style reflects her growing independence. Larry summarized the milestone: "It's a moment you cherish, you look up and time's flown. I got her to the finish line hopefully, and now she has a good foundation to go on and do great things."
