US Cyclospora Outbreak Claims First Two Lives
The US has reported its first two deaths linked to a widespread outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhoea. According to Michigan health officials, the two individuals who died had significant underlying health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the infection and subsequent dehydration.
The outbreak has affected 45 states, with nearly 7,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported nationwide, as stated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
While the CDC notes that deaths from cyclosporiasis are rare and the illness is not usually life-threatening, the current outbreak is spreading rapidly. Michigan, being at the epicentre, has recorded over 11,000 cases and 193 hospitalisations, though many of these have not been laboratory-confirmed.
Cause and Prevention
The parasite, which infects the intestines, is transmitted through faecal contamination, often found in fruits and vegetables irrigated with contaminated water. Past outbreaks have been linked to the consumption of such produce. To mitigate the risk, the CDC advises washing all produce under running water and, if possible, cooking it to at least 70°C (158°F) to kill the parasite.
The current outbreak has been linked to lettuce imported from Taylor Farms in Mexico, a key supplier to many US food establishments. In response, US fast-food chain Taco Bell has removed lettuce from the supplier from its menu, and Taylor Farms has initiated a voluntary recall of the implicated lettuce.
As the situation continues to unfold, health officials are urging vigilance and proper food handling practices to prevent further spread of the outbreak.
