Civilian Casualties Mount in Sudan's Conflict
A devastating drone strike has killed 35 people and injured dozens more in Sudan's Darfur region. The attack, carried out by the Sudanese army, targeted a traditional court session in the north of the region.
The court session was being held under a tree with the participation of local community leaders, a witness reported.
The incident occurred in Ghara al-Zawiya village, which is controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Among those killed were four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders. The army has not commented on the attack.
Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing for three years, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people. The RSF holds most of Darfur, and the two sides continue to fight.
The use of drones in the conflict has raised concerns about the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The Emergency Lawyers Group has called for an investigation into the drone strike, condemning the attack as a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
Calls for Accountability
The RSF has also been accused of war crimes, including drone attacks on civilians. A UN fact-finding mission last year found that the group's siege and attack on el-Fasher, one of Darfur's main cities, bore the hallmarks of genocide. The RSF has denied these accusations.
The international community must take notice of the escalating violence in Sudan and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
