A growing number of deaf and hard-of-hearing workers in China are turning to food delivery platforms, where algorithm-driven dispatch systems offer a level playing field compared to human managers who may discriminate based on disability, according to a Sixth Tone investigation.

However, these algorithms are not without flaws. Although they appear impartial, they can embed hidden disadvantages such as route assignments or rating penalties that disproportionately affect riders unable to use voice communication. For instance, deaf riders might struggle with tasks requiring phone calls to customers, leading to lower efficiency scores.

Still, the case highlights how thoughtfully designed labor platforms could actively support workers with disabilities at scale. It suggests that technology, when engineered inclusively, can offer opportunities that traditional workplaces have failed to provide.
