In a revealing podcast conversation, Nobel Prize-winning Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared the secret master plan for artificial intelligence that extends far beyond chatbots and language models. His vision encompasses nothing less than solving humanity's greatest challenges — from eradicating disease to exploring the cosmos.

Hassabis, who earned a Nobel Prize for his work on AlphaFold, detailed how AI has already cracked a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology: predicting protein structures. That breakthrough, he explained, came from a moment of insight he calls the "aha!" moment that changed science forever.

Building on AlphaFold's success, DeepMind has launched Isomorphic Labs, a company dedicated to designing new drugs with AI. Hassabis also revealed collaborations with CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna to decode the human genome more deeply.

But the master plan doesn't stop at biology. Hassabis reflected on AlphaGo's victory, which he called the birth of AI creativity, and AlphaZero — an AI that teaches itself without human data. These systems, he argued, are stepping stones toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which he described as potentially the most important technology ever invented.

When asked about risks, Hassabis highlighted two existential threats he loses sleep over: the misuse of AI and the loss of human control. Yet his overall outlook remains optimistic. He envisions a sci-fi future where AI helps humanity solve climate change, explore other planets, and perhaps even unlock the secrets of the universe.

The conversation underscores DeepMind's ambition to not just participate in the AI race, but to redefine what AI can achieve for the benefit of all.
