Denmark and Celtic Legend Kasper Schmeichel Forced to Retire Due to Shoulder Injury

Kasper Schmeichel, the 39-year-old Celtic and Denmark goalkeeper, has announced his retirement from professional football after doctors advised him he would not be able to return to top-level play following a severe shoulder injury.

Schmeichel, son of Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, sustained the injury during a Nations League quarter-final loss to Portugal in March 2025. He aggravated it in Celtic's Europa League defeat to Stuttgart 11 months later. After consulting multiple surgeons, he concluded that recovery was impossible.

"I believe that now is the right time," Schmeichel told Danish broadcaster TV2. "This is a decision that has been made for me. I didn't realize how bad it was in March. I've consulted with various surgeons and experts, and they told me I should not expect to return to playing top-flight football."

Schmeichel began his career at Manchester City before moving to Leicester City, where he spent 10 seasons and won the Premier League in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021. He also played for Nice and Anderlecht before joining Celtic in 2023, winning back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

He retires with 120 caps for Denmark, having represented his country at two World Cups (2018 and 2022) and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

"I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the field, but you don't always get what you want," Schmeichel added. "Football doesn't owe me anything. What stands out most are the friendships and connections I've made."
