Divergent Reborn: Veronica Roth Unveils Alternate Universe Duology 15 Years Later

Fifteen years after launching her blockbuster Divergent series, author Veronica Roth is returning to her dystopian world with a surprising new twist. At New York's BookCon 2026, Roth announced The Sixth Faction, a two-book series that reimagines heroine Beatrice "Tris" Prior's journey through an alternate timeline.

"Not a prequel, not a sequel, not a spinoff, not a different POV but an alternate universe of Divergent where Tris chooses a different faction," Roth told USA Today in an interview published April 18. "I think the question of 'who is Tris without Dauntless' is an interesting one."

The new novels, scheduled for release on October 6, diverge from the original narrative at the pivotal Choosing Ceremony. According to HarperCollins' synopsis, "when tragedy strikes at her Choosing Ceremony, everything changes—her world, her plans, even Beatrice herself."

In this reimagined universe, Tris's altered decision "thrusts her into the crosshairs of an underground rebellion, and into the path of a boy with secrets as dangerous as her own—a boy with only a number for a name," suggesting Tobias "Four" Eaton still plays a role in her transformed destiny.

The announcement comes as the original film franchise remains incomplete, with Allegiant Part Two never reaching production. Star Shailene Woodley recently expressed openness to revisiting the series, telling Elite Daily in October, "We're all much older now, so I don't know how that would work, but I think that there's a world where we could make it happen."

Roth's return to the Divergent universe marks a significant moment for the dystopian genre, offering established fans a fresh exploration of familiar characters while potentially attracting new readers to the reimagined narrative.
