Dragons Defy Odds in Paris to Keep Welsh Rugby Alive in Europe

The Dragons have secured Wales' sole remaining spot in the European Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a stunning last-minute victory over Stade Francais in Paris, while fellow Welsh clubs Cardiff and Ospreys suffered heartbreaking exits.

Prop Wyn Jones emerged as the unlikely hero for the Gwent-based side, scoring a dramatic late try to seal a 20-17 triumph at Stade Jean Bouin. The victory marks the Dragons' first away win of the season and sets up a quarter-final clash against Italian side Zebre in Parma on April 11.

Head coach Filo Tiatia praised his team's resilience after the match, saying: "The boys hung in there and really stayed in the fight. That was crucial for the outcome we had. We showed composure when it mattered most."

The result represents one of the most significant achievements in the club's history, comparable to their 2016 quarter-final upset against defending champions Gloucester. For Jones, the try was his first since the 2020 Six Nations.

Meanwhile, Welsh rugby suffered mixed fortunes elsewhere in Europe. Both Cardiff and Ospreys saw their Challenge Cup campaigns end in controversial circumstances, with Television Match Official (TMO) decisions playing decisive roles in their narrow defeats to Benetton and Ulster respectively.

The Dragons' victory comes during a period of improved form for the club, who are currently on a five-game unbeaten run at their Rodney Parade home. Their European journey began with a heavy 41-17 defeat to Perpignan but has culminated in this remarkable Parisian triumph.

Tiatia added: "We have a quarter-final to look forward to and an opportunity. This was a very positive day for us, and I'm proud of the players and thankful for the support from our traveling fans."

The Dragons now face Zebre, who sit at the bottom of the United Rugby Championship but notably defeated Ospreys earlier in the competition. Despite their underdog status throughout the tournament, the Welsh side may enter the quarter-final as slight favorites against the Italian strugglers.
