The grandson of retired Duke University basketball coaching icon Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski has been arrested and charged with driving while impaired following a tragic weekend accident that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old boy.
Joseph Savarino, 22, was operating a Ford Explorer in Durham, North Carolina, around 9 p.m. on Saturday when his vehicle struck the teenager, who was riding a bicycle in the same direction. According to authorities, the young victim died at the scene.
Court documents reveal Savarino later admitted to consuming alcohol and registered a blood alcohol concentration of .11 on a breathalyzer test—significantly above the state's legal limit of .08.
Following his arrest, Savarino was booked into the Durham County Detention Facility. A judge set his bail at $100,000, which he has since posted, securing his release. As a condition of his release, his driver's license has been suspended for a minimum of 30 days. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
This incident marks the second time in recent years that a member of Coach K's family has faced DWI allegations. In 2021, Savarino's brother, Michael, was arrested on similar charges—a case that also implicated former Duke star Paolo Banchero for allegedly aiding and abetting.
The Durham Police Department's investigation into the fatal crash remains active as the community mourns the loss of the young victim.
