In a groundbreaking move, IIT Madras now offers a Bachelor of Science degree that bypasses the notoriously difficult Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Professor Andrew Thangaraj, who leads the program, explains that the initiative aims to democratize access to world-class education.
The online program, designed to cost around $5,000, targets students who missed the JEE cutoff or cannot afford traditional IIT education. It features multiple exit points — diploma, advanced diploma, and full degree — allowing students to tailor their learning to career needs.
Already, the program has attracted a diverse cohort, including older professionals and international students. Thangaraj notes that many graduates emerge with practical skills that traditional JEE-selected students sometimes lack.
Critics argue that the degree may not carry the same prestige as on-campus IIT degrees, but Thangaraj emphasizes that the curriculum is identical and rigorous. The program's approval process took years, navigating bureaucratic hurdles before launch.
For India's millions of engineering aspirants, this alternative path could transform higher education — no JEE required.
