Ella Langley has shared a surprising source of inspiration for her hit song "Choosin' Texas": Miranda Lambert's pet kangaroo.
In an exclusive interview with E! News at Billboard's Women in Music event on April 29, the 26-year-old country singer explained how a story about Lambert's kangaroo led to the track from her second album Dandelion.
"Miranda had a pet kangaroo, and she got pulled over with a kangaroo in her car," Langley recalled. "She had Texas plates in Ohio or somewhere."
According to Langley, the officer who pulled Lambert over told her, "She's from Texas, I can tell," a phrase that stuck with Langley. The line eventually found its way into the song: "She's from Texas, I can tell by the way / He's two-steppin' 'round the room."
Laughing, Langley admitted the hit was "all because of a kangaroo."
Langley also reflected on her songwriting process, noting that she started making music when no one was listening. "I don't really wanna change that necessarily," she said. "The fans are loving it, so I'm like, 'All I got to do is make songs I enjoy?'"
At the event, Langley received the Powerhouse Award and emphasized the importance of authenticity. "To me, that's what powerhouse is — being your authentic self and not giving a s--t about what they all say."
