In a major transfer coup, Harlequins have secured the signing of England international full-back George Furbank from Premiership table-toppers Northampton Saints, with the 29-year-old set to join the London club at the season's end.
Furbank, who has earned 14 caps for England and currently captains Northampton, will depart Franklin's Gardens after a decade-long tenure that saw him lift the Premiership trophy in the 2023-24 campaign. His move represents a significant statement from Harlequins, who currently sit near the bottom of the league standings with just three wins from twelve matches this season.
Despite fracturing his arm early last season, Furbank has returned to form this year, making 11 starts for the league-leading Saints and contributing key tries in both Premiership and European competitions. His influential performance in Northampton's thrilling 49-41 Champions Cup victory over Castres helped secure a quarter-final clash against Bath.
At international level, the versatile back made his England debut under Eddie Jones during the 2020 Six Nations championship-winning campaign. He scored his first international try against Scotland in 2024 before adding a crucial second-half score in England's dramatic 23-22 victory over Ireland at Twickenham.
"George is someone we've admired for a long time - a player who is composed under pressure, instinctive in broken play, and brings a natural attacking flair that aligns perfectly with how we want to play," said Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore. "George also has a strong ambition to return to the Test arena with England heading into a World Cup year, and we're really looking forward to seeing the impact he'll make here at The Stoop."
Furbank's departure comes as Northampton chase another Premiership title, currently leading the standings by a single point with the captain potentially lifting the trophy in June. His career-best 2023-24 season saw him score seven tries and add 39 points with the boot, culminating in Saints' 25-21 final victory over Bath.
"Winning the Prem title with Saints will always be one of the most special days of my life, and something I'll carry with me forever," Furbank reflected on his time with Northampton.
The transfer marks a significant shift in Premiership power dynamics, with one of England's most experienced backs moving from the league leaders to a struggling Harlequins side looking to rebuild their squad for future campaigns.
