Ethiopian Music Icon Teddy Afro's New Song 'Das Tal' Becomes Anthem of Discontent with Seven Million Views

In Ethiopia, where open criticism of the government often carries significant risk, the nation's most celebrated musician has released a powerful new track that resonates with millions. Teddy Afro's song "Das Tal," which translates to "put up the tent," has amassed over seven million views on YouTube since its debut, becoming a cultural touchstone for widespread public sentiment.

"The spirit of being Ethiopian is now pushed away," sings the 49-year-old artist, whose real name is Tewodros Kassahun. "Now I understand the sorrow and pain. Where can someone go to mourn, where do you cry? In the place that raised me, in the village where I grew up, I have become a stranger, like someone with no country."

The song's title references a traditional mourning tent, framing the lyrics as a lament for a nation the artist feels has been lost. Its release was preceded by controversy when a planned preview event for journalists in Addis Ababa was unexpectedly canceled without explanation.

Teddy Afro has long been a vocal figure in Ethiopian politics, frequently clashing with authorities. Two decades ago, he served 16 months in prison for a hit-and-run incident he maintains was politically motivated. His 2017 album "Ethiopia," which topped the Billboard World Albums chart and sold massively domestically, was officially blocked from release in the country by government authorities. That period coincided with massive anti-government protests over the marginalization of the Oromo ethnic group, which eventually led to the ousting of the prime minister.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is Oromo, came to power promising a new era of national unity. Teddy Afro initially supported this vision but has grown disillusioned amid widespread violence and the devastating two-year civil war in northern Ethiopia that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. In 2022, he released a song warning against rising "tribalism," a theme he expands upon in "Das Tal."

While Prime Minister Abiy continues to emphasize unity as the path to prosperity and security—a message expected to intensify ahead of June's general election—Teddy Afro's latest work suggests a deep-seated public grief and alienation that his music continues to channel into a powerful, unifying force.
