EU Urged to Sever Ties with Israel Over Controversial Death Penalty Expansion

A prominent European lawmaker has called for the European Union to fundamentally reassess its relationship with Israel following the passage of a new death penalty law targeting Palestinians.

Pernando Barrena, a member of the European Parliament, argues that Israel's recent legislation allowing capital punishment for Palestinians accused of terrorism represents a critical turning point. "This death penalty law provides further compelling evidence that Europe must treat Israel as an apartheid state," Barrena stated.

According to Barrena, the legislation specifically targeting Palestinians adds to what he describes as a pattern of discriminatory policies. He contends that this development should prompt European nations to reconsider their diplomatic and economic ties with Israel.

"When a state implements laws that apply different penalties based on ethnicity or nationality, it crosses a fundamental line," Barrena explained. "Europe cannot maintain normal relations while such discriminatory legislation remains in place."

The lawmaker's comments come amid ongoing debates within European institutions about how to respond to Israel's policies in occupied territories. Barrena's position represents one of the more forceful calls for action from within the EU's political establishment.

Barrena concluded by emphasizing the urgency of the situation: "This isn't just about one law—it's about recognizing a systematic pattern of discrimination that requires a decisive European response."
