Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table with a nervy 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Eberechi Eze's ninth-minute goal proved decisive, though the Gunners were forced to withstand a resolute second-half fightback from the visitors.
Eze struck early, converting from close range after a corner kick caused chaos in the Newcastle box. The goal came against the run of possession, but Arsenal grew into the match, creating several chances to extend their lead before halftime.
Newcastle, however, showed renewed defensive solidity after a string of recent poor performances. Head coach Eddie Howe praised his side's resilience, saying: "It was our best defensive performance for a long time. We looked solid, we looked good. There were some good bits with the ball as well in both halves. We didn't create enough and when we did, we didn't take them."
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta acknowledged the need for improvement despite the win. "We have to be more dominant with the ball, in many areas," he said. "The end product needs to improve. But we got the result we wanted, and we are very happy. We had so much discipline and courage, and great habits defensively."
The victory lifts Arsenal above Manchester City in the standings, though City hold a game in hand. The title race remains tight, and every point is precious.
Elsewhere in Europe, Barcelona moved closer to retaining their La Liga title with a 2-0 win over Getafe, stretching their lead to 11 points after Real Madrid were held to a draw on Friday.
For Newcastle, the defeat is another setback in a frustrating campaign. "Losing games isn't good enough," Howe admitted. "We've got to try and put it together."
