The US government's ban on foreign-made drones has been exposed as a flawed policy, with fake companies emerging to sneak in Chinese technology.
The ban, imposed in December 2025, was meant to address national security concerns, but it has instead created a loophole for companies to pretend to manufacture drones in the US.
One such company, Odyssey Robot, claimed to be designing, developing, and manufacturing drones in Pasadena, California. However, an investigation revealed that the company's office was nothing more than a sparse, unused room in a coworking space.
Further research showed that Odyssey Robot's drones were actually made in China, using proprietary DJI technology. The company had simply lied on its FCC application, declaring that its drones were made in the US.
This is not an isolated incident. Several other companies have been found to be using similar tactics, with some even listing DJI's trademarked technology as their own features.
The FCC's approval process has been criticized for being too lenient, allowing these fake companies to sneak in Chinese technology. The agency's failure to thoroughly vet these companies has undermined the purpose of the ban, which was to protect national security.
As a result, US citizens are still able to purchase DJI tech, but now they are dealing with fly-by-night businesses with no guarantee of support in the future.
The incident highlights the need for stricter regulations and more thorough vetting of companies applying for FCC approval. Otherwise, the ban on foreign-made drones will remain ineffective, and national security concerns will continue to be compromised.
