A routine traffic stop in Florida has sparked outrage after an officer mistakenly accused a disabled driver of holding a phone with her missing right hand. The incident, which was captured on dashcam and has since gone viral, highlights the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities when interacting with law enforcement.
According to the driver, who has a prosthetic limb, the officer pulled her over for allegedly using a phone while driving. When she explained that she couldn't hold a phone due to her amputation, the officer persisted, claiming he saw a device in her right hand.
The driver's attorney stated that the officer failed to recognize her visible disability and the prosthetic limb. The video shows the driver calmly demonstrating that her right hand is missing, after which the officer eventually acknowledged the mistake.
Advocates for disability rights argue that this incident underscores the need for better training for officers. "Law enforcement must be aware of and sensitive to the diverse situations they encounter," said a spokesperson for a local disability advocacy group.
The driver plans to file a complaint against the officer, and the police department has said it will review the incident.
