While the highly anticipated revival of Malcolm in the Middle—titled Life's Still Unfair—prepares for its April 10 premiere on Hulu, one original cast member remains notably absent from the project. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the beloved youngest brother Dewey, has chosen a path far from the Hollywood limelight, recently spotted during a rare public outing in Boston.
Now 34, Sullivan is currently pursuing a graduate degree at Harvard University, a pursuit that aligns with his decision to step away from acting at age 14. Dressed casually in jeans and a navy sweater, he was seen on a low-key grocery run on April 3, marking one of his few public appearances in recent years.
Despite the revival reuniting most of the original cast—including Bryan Cranston (Hal), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Justin Berfield (Reese), and Christopher Masterson (Francis)—Sullivan has firmly declined to return, even turning down substantial financial offers.
As Bryan Cranston revealed on the Fly on the Wall podcast last June:
"I talked to Erik and I said, 'Hey, we got the show! It's going to come back.' He goes, 'Oh, that's fantastic!' And I go, 'Yeah, so we're looking forward to having you back.' He goes, 'Oh, no, no, I don't want to do it. But it's fantastic.' He said, 'Oh God, no, I haven't acted since I was 9 or something. So, I'm not into it.'"
Jane Kaczmarek, who played Dewey's on-screen mother Lois, provided additional insight into Sullivan's current life, telling The Guardian:
"He's studying Charles Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said: 'No thank you.'"
In the revival, the role of Dewey will be portrayed by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. Frankie Muniz expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating in February 2025:
"I think people are going to be thrilled to see everybody and the ideas that they've come up with. Because that was a big thing for me, too, is like the possibilities are endless on what Malcolm and his family could be up to. I've read the scripts, so I know. And I think people are going to be pretty excited."
