A federal grand jury in North Carolina returned the indictment on Tuesday, which includes two counts: threatening the president and transmitting a threat through interstate commerce. The charges stem from a photo Comey posted online last May, showing seashells arranged to form the numbers 86 and 47. Critics interpreted this as a reference to killing Trump, the 47th president. Comey deleted the post and stated that such an interpretation was not his intent.
This case is the latest example of prosecutors under the Trump administration pursuing criminal charges against the president's perceived political enemies.
