Former NFL defensive end Josh Mauro has passed away at the age of 35, his family confirmed on Thursday. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Mauro, who was born in St Albans, England, while his father worked in the UK, played 80 games over eight seasons in the NFL. He spent the majority of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, where he became a dependable rotational player.
"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro," the Cardinals said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss."
Mauro also played for the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Over his career, he recorded 150 tackles and five sacks.
Former Cardinals player and executive Adrian Wilson remembered Mauro as a reliable teammate. "I had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years with coach Bruce Arians. He was always in shape, always ready to go wherever he got that call. One of the things I respected most about him, you could depend on him."
Mauro's father, Greg, announced the news on social media. The NFL community has expressed an outpouring of tributes for the former defensive end.
