Nathalie Baye, the celebrated French actress known to international audiences for her role in "Downton Abbey: A New Era," has passed away at age 77. According to reports from her family to French press agency AFP, she died peacefully at her home in Paris on Friday evening after a battle with Lewy body dementia.

Lewy body dementia is among the most prevalent forms of dementia, characterized by symptoms such as visual hallucinations and progressive challenges with cognition, movement, and mood.

Baye's career spanned over five decades, beginning with her breakout role in François Truffaut's 1973 film "Day for Night." She amassed more than 100 acting credits, including a memorable performance as the mother of Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can." Most recently, she portrayed Madame de Montmirail, a confidante of Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, in the 2022 "Downton Abbey" sequel.

Beyond her professional achievements, Baye was the mother of actress Laura Smet, her daughter with late French rock icon Johnny Hallyday. Her final screen appearance was in the 2023 film "Mother Valley."
