Former World Grand Prix champions Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are on a collision course, setting the stage for a highly anticipated all-Welsh quarter-final showdown in Leicester this Friday.
Price secured his spot in the final eight by exacting revenge on England's Ross Smith, the man who defeated him in the World Series final earlier this month. The "Iceman" cruised to a flawless straight-sets victory and has yet to drop a single set in the current tournament.
"It wasn't a brilliant game, but a win's a win and I'm still in the tournament," Price remarked following his decisive win.
Meanwhile, Clayton powered past Dutch contender Wessel Nijman with a 3-1 victory in his second-round matchup. Clayton delivered an impressive performance, averaging 93 and hammering home eight 180s. The stakes are particularly high for Clayton; should he go all the way and capture his second World Grand Prix title on Sunday, he will officially reclaim the title of Welsh number one.
The upcoming clash is laced with a good-natured, competitive rivalry between the compatriots.
"There's banter between me and Gezzy," Clayton shared, noting that they frequently tease each other over the top national ranking. "Every time Gezzy gets back to number one, he sends me a flag with a number one on. We have good banter... we're good friends, world number four and five, you can't fault that from Wales."
Price also acknowledged the history between the two, recalling a past defeat at Clayton's hands while offering a few playful jabs of his own.
"I remember years ago, Jonny in the final of this tournament absolutely smashed me," Price said. "He played pretty decent today, I think he got lucky first round. Hopefully, he doesn't get lucky in the next round."
In other tournament action, Nathan Aspinall and Ryan Joyce have also booked their tickets to Friday's quarter-finals. Both players secured dominant straight-set wins on Wednesday against Luke Woodhouse and Danny Noppert, respectively. Woodhouse had previously made tournament headlines on Monday by eliminating defending champion Luke Littler.
The remaining four spots in the quarter-finals will be decided during Thursday evening's scheduled matches.
