Northern Ireland's Jon McConnell secured a spectacular boxing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, overcoming Wales' Orlando Holley-Sotomi in a thrilling light-middleweight final at the SEC Centre.
McConnell’s split-decision victory provided a much-needed golden lining for Team NI, arriving shortly after teammates Michaela Walsh and Kaci Rock both suffered unanimous decision defeats to take home silver medals.
The path to gold was far from easy for McConnell, who famously rejected an offer to appear on the hit reality show Love Island to focus on his Commonwealth debut. He endured a rocky start in the opening round, absorbing heavy left hands from Holley-Sotomi. However, he quickly regained his composure to dominate the second round, aided by the Welshman being penalized a point for striking the back of the head.
Despite weathering more heavy blows in the final round, McConnell delivered crucial counter-punches to seal the win. The judges scored the bout favorably for the Northern Irishman, with two scoring it 30-26 and another two 29-27, while a lone judge favored Holley-Sotomi 29-27.
"It doesn't feel real at the minute. I said I was going to do it and I've done it," McConnell shared with TNT Sports after the bout. "We knew he was strong. The game plan was to out-box him... It was the matador against the bull, and the matador won today."
His victory marks Team Northern Ireland's second gold medal of the Games, following Kate O'Connor's heptathlon triumph earlier in the week.
Walsh Secures Historic Fourth Medal
While she missed out on defending her 2022 Birmingham gold, 33-year-old Michaela Walsh cemented her legacy by claiming her fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games medal.
Facing Jaismine in her final, the boxing standout started slow in a cautious first round. Despite a spirited effort in the closing minutes to force a stoppage, Jaismine outclassed the veteran to secure the unanimous decision (with three judges scoring 29-28 and two scoring 30-27).
Walsh now holds one gold and three silver medals across four Games appearances, placing her among an elite group of Northern Irish athletes to achieve a four-medal haul.
Meanwhile, Kaci Rock also added to Team NI's boxing tally, putting up a valiant effort but ultimately having to settle for silver following her own hard-fought unanimous decision defeat.
