Gaza Families Finally Lay to Rest 105 Victims of 2023 Airstrike Following Massive Rubble Recovery

Hundreds of mourners congregated in Gaza City to hold a mass funeral for 105 Palestinians whose remains were recently pulled from the rubble of a devastating October 2023 Israeli airstrike.

Draped in Palestinian flags, the bodies were laid to rest at the Martyrs Cemetery in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood following traditional funeral prayers. For many surviving relatives, the ceremony offered a moment of profound, albeit heavily delayed, closure after years of agonizing uncertainty.

The victims perished when a barrage of at least 20 bombs decimated the seven-story Al Taj 3 residential complex and surrounding homes in Yarmouk Square. At the time of the attack, the buildings were packed with displaced families who had fled heavy bombardments in northern Gaza to seek shelter with relatives.

Gaza's civil defense forces coordinated the extensive recovery effort alongside an Egyptian committee. The operation is currently recognized as the fifth-largest of its kind since the outbreak of the war. Abdul al-Majdalawi, a director for the civil defense, explained that immediate rescue operations back in 2023 were completely thwarted because rescue machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, were deliberately targeted by Israeli forces.

The personal toll for local families has been catastrophic. Osama Sharaf, a surviving relative, lost a staggering 37 family members in the Yarmouk Square strike.

"We recovered some of them at the beginning of the war, and today, 16 more were recovered, including my father, my mother and all of my siblings. My sister’s son was also there with them," Sharaf shared.

This somber burial takes place against the backdrop of a highly fragile and frequently violated ceasefire. Palestinian health authorities report that more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since a truce was supposedly implemented, with journalists on the ground citing thousands of military violations that leave civilians terrified to step outside.

Sultan Barakat, a public policy professor at Qatar Foundation’s Hamad Bin Khalifa University, noted that the international community has consistently failed to hold the Israeli military accountable or enforce the terms of the ceasefire agreements. With no international security force deployed to protect civilians as initially proposed, Barakat emphasized that Palestinians remain utterly unprotected on the streets of Gaza.
