Gloucester Hold Off Exeter Comeback to Snatch Thrilling 34-31 Victory

Gloucester delivered their most impressive league performance in months, overcoming a second-half surge from play-off contenders Exeter Chiefs to secure a 34-31 win at Kingsholm.

After conceding an early try to Ross Vintcent, the home side dominated a frantic first half, earning a try bonus point with scores from captain Tomos Williams, Will Trenholm, and a double from Max Llewellyn.

Exeter responded with tries from Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Greg Fisilau either side of half-time, and after Trenholm added his second, the visitors seized control with a penalty try and a score from Henry Slade to narrow the gap to three points.

In a tense finish, with the clock in the red and Exeter attacking, flanker Ethan Roots was shown a 20-minute red card for striking a Gloucester player in the face. Williams then kicked the ball into touch to seal a deserved win.

Despite earning two bonus points and moving up to fourth, the loss is a setback for Exeter's play-off hopes. They now sit just one point ahead of Bristol, with tough fixtures against Bath and Leicester still to come.

The Chiefs started strongly, with Stephen Varney's up-and-under regathered by Greg Fisilau, allowing Paul Brown-Bampoe to accelerate down the wing and offload to Vintcent for an easy score.

Gloucester hit back quickly. After strong running from Ben Loader, the home side moved into Exeter's 22 before Williams found Llewellyn, who stepped inside to force his way over.

Williams then scored himself, spotting a gap around the ruck to dart over and extend the lead. Loader soon fought through two tackles on the wing, producing a perfect offload for Llewellyn to score his second, making it 19-5.

Exeter responded through Feyi-Waboso, who cut back inside to score past George Barton after strong carries from Harvey Skinner. But Gloucester restored their advantage through Trenholm, who powered over after sustained pressure.
