Google Commits Up to $40B to Anthropic in Landmark AI Investment Deal

Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in AI firm Anthropic, combining cash and computing resources, according to a Bloomberg report. The Alphabet subsidiary will initially inject $10 billion at a $350 billion valuation, with an additional $30 billion contingent on Anthropic achieving specific performance milestones.

This investment follows Anthropic's recent limited release of its most advanced model yet, Mythos, which is geared toward cybersecurity applications. Due to concerns over potential misuse, Anthropic has restricted wider access while it collaborates with selected partners to assess safety — although the model has already been accessed by unauthorized users. Running Mythos at scale is also expected to be highly compute-intensive.

As the AI race intensifies, securing massive computing capacity has become a critical competitive advantage. OpenAI, for instance, has moved to expand its own infrastructure, while Google's deep pockets and cloud resources give it a strategic edge in backing Anthropic.
