Google Pledges Up to $40 Billion in AI Startup Anthropic

SAN FRANCISCO – Google is planning to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence firm confirmed on Friday, deepening a long-standing partnership between the two tech giants.

An Anthropic representative told AFP that the agreement includes an initial $10 billion investment from Google, with an additional $30 billion contingent on the startup meeting performance milestones. In return, Anthropic will use custom Google chips and cloud computing services to power its AI technology.

The announcement comes just days after Amazon revealed plans to boost its collaboration with Anthropic with a new $5 billion investment, along with a potential $20 billion more if performance targets are met. Anthropic has committed to spending over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade to support its AI development.

Anthropic is among AI-sector rivals spending tens of billions on computing infrastructure to lead in the technology. The company reported in early April that its annualized revenues had tripled quarter-over-quarter to more than $30 billion, outpacing OpenAI for the first time.

Dispute

Separately, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei visited the White House, where both sides struck a friendly tone following a dispute over the company's refusal to grant the military unconditional use of its AI models.

Earlier this month, Anthropic announced its newest AI model, Mythos, but withheld it from public release due to potential cybersecurity risks. The company said this week it is investigating unauthorized access to Mythos, a powerful model it worries could be a boon for hackers. Initially, Mythos was restricted to 40 major tech firms to give them a head start in patching vulnerabilities.
