Google announced on Thursday that it is bringing its Gemini AI assistant to millions of cars equipped with Google built-in, starting with an estimated 4 million General Motors vehicles from model year 2022 and newer. The move upgrades the existing Google Assistant with more conversational, advanced AI capabilities.
The rollout begins in the U.S. with English-language support and will expand to more regions in the coming months. Compatible existing cars will receive the update via software, so drivers don't necessarily need to buy a new vehicle to get Gemini.
While GM confirmed yesterday that Gemini will power its virtual assistant across brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC, Google did not name other specific automakers, suggesting availability will extend beyond GM.
Cars with Google built-in launched in 2020, and the Gemini integration aims to make interactions more natural and intuitive. Drivers can ask complex follow-up questions, get route suggestions based on conversation, and control vehicle functions seamlessly.
The announcement signals Google's strategy to embed generative AI into everyday driving, competing with similar efforts from Amazon and Apple.
