Two Green Party candidates running in upcoming local elections in England have been arrested on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred, following an investigation into antisemitic material posted online.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests, stating that two women, aged 57 and 54, were taken into custody under Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986. The force launched its inquiry after receiving reports of concern on 21 April.
A Green Party spokesperson declined to comment, saying the matter is now in police hands. However, sources indicate that one of the candidates has been suspended from the party.
Deputy Green Party leader Rachel Millward described the alleged comments as "abhorrent" during an appearance on BBC Question Time, adding that the candidates are "going through disciplinary process."
