Green Party Picks Nurse as Candidate for Makerfield By-Election

The Green Party has selected Chris Kennedy, a registered nurse and children's safeguarding specialist, as its candidate for the upcoming Makerfield by-election.

Kennedy, who lives locally and grew up in nearby Leigh, was chosen by local party members after a hustings event.

The by-election, scheduled for 18 June, was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons. Simons stepped down to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the seat and potentially return to Parliament.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski expressed confidence in Kennedy, stating: "Chris will be a fantastic candidate and representative for Makerfield. This election is about who is making the case for lower bills, warmer and more affordable homes, and a greener and fairer economy."

Five other parties have announced candidates for the Makerfield by-election:

  • Andy Burnham, Labour Party
  • Alan "Howlin' Laud" Hope, The Official Monster Raving Loony Party
  • Robert Kenyon, Reform UK
  • Rebecca Shepherd, Restore Britain
  • Michael Winstanley, Conservative Party
