MANILA, Philippines — The renowned sweet mangoes of Guimaras Island have made their historic first export to Europe, with a 100-kilogram test shipment arriving in Spain, marking a significant milestone for Philippine agriculture.
The shipment, facilitated by Guimaras Wonder Farms, aims to open new market opportunities for high-value Philippine products. "At its heart is a shared objective: to connect Philippine farmers and SMEs more directly with international markets," the Philippine Embassy in Spain stated on June 19.
Guimaras mangoes, known for their exceptional sweetness and aroma, are the Philippines' first registered Geographical Indication product, cultivated exclusively on Guimaras Island.
Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe Lhuillier highlighted the broader impact: "Introducing premium Philippine products to European markets creates opportunities not only for our exporters, but also for our farmers, entrepreneurs, and local communities."
The mangoes' European tour began in Brussels, Belgium, before continuing to key cities including The Hague, Paris, Berlin, and Madrid. The initiative involves the Department of Trade and Industry, the provincial government of Guimaras, and Philippine embassies across Europe.
