Heatwave Brings Post-Bank Holiday Tourism Surge to South West England

Tourism businesses in South West England are reporting a significant boost after a bank holiday weekend of scorching temperatures, which reached 31°C (88°F) in some areas. The hot weather, accompanied by a yellow heat health alert in place until Wednesday, drove crowds to coastal destinations, providing a much-needed lift for the local tourism industry.

Lauren Pattison, from Looe Sea Safari, described the sunny conditions as a "big boost" following a quiet Easter period. Her sentiment was echoed by Kevin Blewett, owner of Looe Beach Hire, who hailed the start of summer as "good." The influx of visitors has been a welcome change for businesses, many of which have struggled with reduced visitor numbers in recent years.

Al Wallis, owner of The Sandwich Bar in Looe, noted that the cost of living crisis had made trading challenging, but the bank holiday rush "makes a big difference." He observed that trade had been declining incrementally each year, but added, "when the sun comes out, it's all OK again."

Scott Davies, owner of Babbacombe Palms Guest House in Torquay, said the positive month was vital for the sector. "Everyone needs a good season this year," he said, noting that many guest houses and hotels in the area are up for sale because owners are struggling to make ends meet. Rising utility and food costs have squeezed margins.

Claire Flower, director of Beverley Holidays, acknowledged that "times at the moment are really hard with the cost of living," but reported trends of last-minute bookings and shorter stays, while maintaining an optimistic outlook: "It's still looking really positive, and the bookings are coming in."

Data from the South West tourism sector had already indicated a strong start to the year in April, following a dip in 2025. The bank holiday weekend has reinforced this recovery, with businesses hoping the momentum continues into the summer.
