Hollywood Mourns: Gabrielle Union's Father Sylvester 'Cully' Union Jr. Passes at 81 After Dementia Struggle

Gabrielle Union is grieving the loss of her beloved father, Sylvester 'Cully' Union Jr., who died on April 3 at the age of 81 following a prolonged battle with dementia.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on Instagram, the actress reflected on her father's life and the difficult journey of his illness. She described dementia as a "painfully slow disappearing" but emphasized that the disease did not define who he was.

"It's bewildering to feel relief that the pain has ended, but profound heartbreak at the finality of his time," Union wrote. "I know I'm not the first or last Daddy's girl to go through this, and I'm sending love and healing to anyone suffering the loss of a parent. I know his love is eternal and will find me in every realm."

Accompanying her words was a montage of cherished family moments, celebrating Sylvester as "the life of EVERY party" who was "surrounded by love" wherever he went. She fondly recalled his outgoing nature, noting, "I swear he never met a stranger, just friends he hadn't met yet."

A lifelong Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, Sylvester imparted valuable life lessons to his daughter about teamwork, a strong work ethic, and the importance of supporting others. "He taught me that you are only as strong as your weakest link, so tend to them first," she shared.

Union acknowledged her father's imperfections but praised his commitment to personal growth. "Over time he evolved, acknowledged his imperfections, apologized and made amends for as long as it took for the hurts to heal," she explained. "He made it his business to look after everyone. He loved our friends too and treated them like his sons and daughters. No one was ever left behind or unseen."

Her husband, former NBA star Dwyane Wade, also paid tribute to his father-in-law, reposting Gabrielle's message on his Instagram Stories with the caption, "Thank you for all the memories pops [love] you."

The entertainment community and fans have extended their condolences to the Union-Wade family during this difficult time.
