Plymouth, Devon
As well as sheltered bays, Plymouth has plenty of other swimming spots. The Grade II-listed art deco Tinside lido was built in 1935 and is filled with saltwater. In the Mount Wise estate, there are three pools with views across the River Tamar into Cornwall. In Plymouth Hoe, a conservation area, is a Grade II-listed four-storey townhouse with a lower-ground-floor apartment, a courtyard garden and a double garage. It overlooks the historic bowling green and is separated from the seafront by the promenade. £925,000. Marchand Petit, 01752 873 311 Photograph: Marchand Petit

Manor House, London
On the 21st floor of one of the taller towers in the Woodberry Down development is a two-bedroom apartment with views over two reservoirs – one of which is popular for sailing as well as open-water swimming. The flat has a large open-plan kitchen-dining-living room with a balcony. Woodberry Down is one of Europe’s biggest single-site regeneration projects and is taking shape over 20 years. Comprising 5,500 homes, it involves rebuilding the estate around the water and a nature reserve. £650,000.Dexters, 020 7483 6360 Photograph: Dexters

Cellardyke, Fife
Sitting on the shoreline is a handsome stone-built house on the end of a terrace and with a garden that morphs into the stoney coastline. Inside is a traditional four-bedroom seaside cottage with wooden flooring, white walls and sash windows with shutters. The back garden is a paved courtyard with timber decking and a built-in barbeque. For those who prefer sheltered swimming to a wild dip in the Firth of Forth, there is the popular Cellardyke tidal pool, known as the Bathie, on the edge of town with a mobile sauna and cafes nearby. £780,000. Litton Cheney, Dorset
Litton Lakes is a campsite where campers and day visitors can swim, kayak and paddleboard, just inland from West Bexington on the Jurassic Coast. In this neighbouring village is a characterful four-bedroom house which was once an old granary. Exposed timber beams and arches are on display in the sitting room. In the back garden is a paved terrace overlooking a spring-fed lake with resident wildlife. The lake joins a stream on the south-west boundary and there is a vegetable plot, a timber shed and a lean-to greenhouse to boot. £850,000. Hampstead, London
With views from the kitchen, balcony and garden of the Hampstead ponds and the heath beyond, is a four-bedroom five-storey Victorian townhouse. Although the agent describes it as in need of modernisation, this elegant property has period features to be celebrated, such as its ornate cornicing and original fireplaces, all under high ceilings. On the lower ground floor, an alcove separates the reception room at the front from the kitchen-diner, which leads to the garden. There is another living room and study on the ground floor. £6.45m.
