Yemen's Houthi group has announced a comprehensive prohibition on Israeli vessels attempting to navigate the Red Sea, escalating regional tensions. The declaration, made by the Iran-backed movement, aims to disrupt Israeli maritime traffic through one of the world's most vital trade arteries.
"We declare a total ban on Israeli ships crossing the Red Sea," a Houthi spokesperson stated.
The ban covers all vessels flying the Israeli flag or owned by Israeli entities. The Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen, have previously targeted ships in the area, but this marks a formal policy shift. The Red Sea is crucial for global commerce, connecting the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean.
International shipping companies are advised to reassess routes to avoid potential confrontations. The move follows increased Houthi rhetoric against Israel amid the broader Middle East conflict.
