The open source AI ecosystem on Hugging Face continues to expand rapidly, according to the platform's Spring 2026 community report. The number of publicly available model repositories has grown by 40% year-over-year, with multimodal and code-generation models seeing the largest increases.
Key highlights include:
- Over 1.5 million model checkpoints are now hosted, up from 1 million in Spring 2025.
- Community contributions to datasets and Spaces apps have also doubled.
- The most popular new category is small language models (under 7B parameters), which now account for 60% of new uploads.
"The democratization of AI is accelerating, with hobbyists and researchers alike pushing the boundaries of what's possible,” said a Hugging Face spokesperson.
The report also notes a shift toward more permissive licenses, with Apache 2.0 and MIT licenses now covering 70% of new models. This reflects a broader industry trend favoring openness and collaboration.
Looking ahead, the report predicts continued growth in edge AI and on-device models, as well as increased integration with open source hardware projects.
