HuggingFace, a leading AI platform, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to accelerate the creation of language models tailored to India's vast linguistic diversity. The collaboration aims to provide tools, resources, and expertise to researchers and developers working on Indic languages, which are often underrepresented in AI.
As part of the initiative, HuggingFace will offer its model hub and computing resources to IISc's AI and language labs, while IISc contributes its deep understanding of Indian languages and NLP challenges. The partnership is expected to facilitate the development of more accurate and inclusive AI systems that can understand and generate text in languages like Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and dozens more.
The joint effort underscores the growing recognition of India's linguistic diversity as a critical frontier for AI research. By combining HuggingFace's global platform with IISc's academic expertise, the project aims to empower local researchers and reduce barriers to entry for building multilingual AI models.

The partnership aligns with India's National Language Technology Mission, which seeks to promote digital inclusion across the country's 22 scheduled languages and hundreds of dialects.
