The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has confirmed that the Republic of Ireland's upcoming Nations League home fixture against Israel will be played at a neutral venue behind closed doors, citing operational challenges.
Originally scheduled for 4 October at Dublin's Aviva Stadium, the match was relocated after FAI board discussions and UEFA approval. The decision follows growing pressure from activist groups and public protests over the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The FAI stated that consultations with stakeholders led to the conclusion that operational difficulties could affect the game's delivery on home soil. The association thanked Irish police for their support and noted that the move was deemed appropriate with UEFA's backing.
Earlier this year, the FAI had insisted it would fulfill the fixtures, with CEO David Courell warning of "serious consequences" for withdrawal. Republic of Ireland captain Nathan Collins recently said players would not be stopped from taking a personal stand on the issue.
The two sides are also scheduled to meet on 27 September at a neutral venue for Israel's home match in Group B3.
