Irish Actor Michael Patrick, Known for 'Game of Thrones' Role, Dies at 35 After Brave Battle with Motor Neuron Disease

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Michael Patrick, a talented Irish actor celebrated for his stage work and television appearances, including a role in the acclaimed series Game of Thrones. He passed away at the age of 35 after a courageous three-year fight against Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

His wife, Naomi Sheehan, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that Michael died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones after a brief hospital stay. "Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are," she expressed in a heartfelt tribute posted on April 8.

Motor Neuron Disease is a group of neurological disorders, such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), where motor neurons deteriorate prematurely. This leads to progressive difficulties with essential functions like speaking, swallowing, and moving. Currently, there is no known cure for MND.

In her moving post, Naomi reflected on her husband's enduring spirit, writing:

"It's been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life. He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger haired man."

She concluded with a poignant quote from Irish poet Brendan Behan, which Michael held dear: "'The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.' So, don't overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love."

Michael's career was marked by versatility and passion. Beyond his stage performances in Shakespearean productions, he appeared in TV series like Blue Lights, This Town, and Blasts from the Past, and featured in an episode of Game of Thrones during its sixth season. He also co-wrote and starred in the BBC series My Left Nut, based on a one-man play he created about his teenage fears of testicular cancer.

Following his MND diagnosis in 2023, Michael channeled his experiences into another one-man show, My Right Foot, named for where he first noticed symptoms. With characteristic humor, he joked about the production in a social media post last year, saying, "I should be performing it... in October... as long as I'm not dead by then! That's the type of joke you can expect if you come to see the play."

In 2024, he delivered a powerful performance as Richard III in a wheelchair-adapted staging of The Tragedy of Richard III, for which he earned the Judges' award at The Stage Awards in early 2025—one of the UK's top drama honors. Reflecting on the experience, Michael shared, "I have never felt more love and support. Thank you to everyone who made the show, and everyone who came to see it. Couldn't be prouder of what we made."

He also posted the final monologue from the play, a blend of Shakespearean themes on mortality that resonated deeply with his personal journey. It ended with the lines: "That we shall die, we know. 'Tis but the time, and drawing days out, that men stand upon. For death, a necessary end, will come when it will come."

Michael Patrick's legacy is one of artistic brilliance, resilience, and an unwavering zest for life, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him or witnessed his work.
